How to do the smokey eye look without looking like you've just put eyeliner all round your eyes!?

Step by step guide please! How to do the smokey eye look without looking like you've just put eyeliner all round your eyes!?
The key is more shadow and less liner; and lots of blending and smudging! That's the real beauty of the smoky eye--to look wild and carefree. Also, if you are a fair person, sometimes darker colors don't look very good--the contrast is too stark. Other alternatives are blue, green, or purple--these colors look stunning without being overwhelming.

And it also depends on how you are doing the smoky eye look: depending on the your eye crease, sometimes it is better to just line the top lashes OR just the bottom lashes. Another option is to line half of each. How to do the smokey eye look without looking like you've just put eyeliner all round your eyes!?
1 - Apply Primer or Powder to lid so makeup will last.

2 - Apply a thin line of eyeliner as close to your lash line as possible (make sure pencil is sharp), both top and bottom. I like to use a waterproof pencil.

3 - Smudge with your clean ring finger or a q-tip.

4 - Add more liner, smudge again, keep doing this until you have reached your desired smokiness - obviously less smoky for day.

5 - Add a powder eyeshadow over the liner in the same color to make it last longer and to soften the look. Blend outward - but not too much on the bottom.

6 - If evening, add the eyeshadow up to your crease, blending out as you go - the makeup will be darkest at your lash line and will fade or ';smoke'; out as it goes up your lid.

7 - add a shimmer color to the brow bone and the inside corner of the eye to make it pop.

8 - Load up with black mascara especially on the top lashes. For extra special occasions, add false lashes.

9 - Comb and fill in your brows if they need it, nothing ruins a great smoky look like unkempt brows.

10 - Remove any powder ';fall out'; that happened under your eye, now use concealer or foundation.

Experiment with different colors, smoky does not always have to be black. Blue eyes look great with a bronzy brown, Brown eyes with a deep purple or army green.

Practice and have fun!
